When we instruct in white water safety, we create workshops that aim to present a strong learning environment for the development of safety and rescue skills, which means a thorough exploration of the more hazardous areas of white water paddling. This means that paradoxically, river safety instruction can carry with it a higher risk of personal injury to staff and participants. It is, however, our belief that if properly controlled these risks can be strongly mitigated, and furthermore, that the long term dangers of participating in an ineffective safety training course are greater to our participants than the short term risks we expose them to on this training. The potential benefits of being well trained in white water safety skills and culture are many, and have impacts that reach across whitewater communities around the world, and spreading these benefits is our aim.
